Chemical composition of the Magnelis® steel coating

beSteel uses steel that is coated on a classic industrial hot dip galvanising line, but is dipped in a molten bath comprising a distinctive metallic chemical composition of zinc with 3.5% aluminium and 3% magnesium. The 3% magnesium is crucial as it creates a stable and robust layer across the entire metal surface, providing a far more effective defence against corrosion than coatings with a lower magnesium content. Magnelis® performs up to ten times better than galvanised steel.

Exceptional corrosion resistance

Magnelis® steel coating offers an exceptional resistance against atmospheric corrosion, much more than conventionally galvanized steel.  It withstands the harshest of environments : in an ammonia environment the destruction of the coating is sevent imes less than with a standard zinc coating.  It has been subjected to eight months of salt spray testing and no red rust could be observed on the Magnelis® sample.

Self-healing effect

Magnelis® offers the same cathodical protection as traditional metal coatings.  This, in combination with a magnesium film however, greatly amplifies the resistance to corrision.  The nature of this film varies depending on the environment as well as the content of aluminum and magnesium.
